It's one of the most common questions we get after a treatment: can I have a drink tonight? The honest answer is to hold off for about 24 hours. It's not that alcohol ruins your Botox — it's that it makes the most common short-term side effect, bruising, much more likely.
Why alcohol and Botox don't mix (at first)
Alcohol does two things that work against a clean recovery from injections:
- It thins your blood. Like aspirin, fish oil, and ibuprofen, alcohol makes you more prone to bruising at the injection sites.
- It dilates your blood vessels. Wider vessels plus tiny needle pricks means a higher chance of a visible bruise or some swelling.
None of this affects whether the Botox works — but a bruise on your forehead before an event is exactly what most people are trying to avoid.
The simple timeline
- ~24 hours before: skip alcohol so your blood isn't thinned going into the appointment
- Day of treatment: no alcohol — give the injection sites a calm few hours to settle
- After 24 hours: a drink is generally fine
While you're at it: the first 24 hours are also the time to skip strenuous exercise, saunas, hot tubs, and rubbing the treated area. For the full list, see our guide on what to avoid after Botox.
What if you already had a drink?
Don't panic — one drink isn't going to undo your treatment. You may just have a slightly higher chance of a small bruise, which fades on its own within a few days. Stay hydrated, avoid rubbing the area, and you'll be fine.
The bottom line
Botox is quick and low-downtime, and a little planning around alcohol keeps it that way. If you have an event coming up, book your Botox appointment at least two weeks ahead and keep the day before and the day of alcohol-free — you'll get the cleanest, bruise-free result.
