Teeth grinding and clenching — clinically called bruxism — is incredibly common, often worse with stress, and frequently happens at night when you can't control it. The damage adds up: worn teeth, cracked fillings, a sore jaw, and tension headaches. The muscle behind almost all of it is the masseter, the powerful muscle at the corner of your jaw. Relaxing it with Botox is one of the most effective ways to break the cycle.
How Botox stops the grind
Botox injected into the masseter reduces how forcefully the muscle can contract. It's still strong enough for normal chewing, but it can't clamp down with the crushing force of a clench or grind. With that force turned down, the grinding eases, the jaw stops being held in constant tension, and the soreness and headaches usually improve. Most patients notice a clear difference within 1–2 weeks, and results last about 3–4 months.
Botox vs. a nightguard
This is the most common question — and the honest answer is they do different jobs:
- A nightguard protects your teeth from the damage of grinding, but it doesn't reduce the clenching itself — your muscles still work just as hard.
- Botox reduces how hard those muscles can clench in the first place, which addresses the pain, soreness, and headaches at the source.
Many patients get the best result using both: the guard protects the teeth while the Botox calms the muscle. If your jaw pain is significant, it's worth reading about Botox for TMJ, which targets the same muscle for pain relief.
Bonus benefit: Because grinders often build up an over-developed masseter, relaxing it also slims the jawline over a few weeks. Many patients come in for the grinding relief and are delighted with the softer, more tapered lower face — see our masseter Botox page.
What to expect
- The visit: a few quick injections per side, under 30 minutes, performed by Celeste Cisneros, FNP-BC — a medical provider, not an esthetician
- Dose: about 40–60 units total, mapped to how strong your masseter is
- Cost: roughly $400–$600 at Solas ($10/unit at 20+ units)
- Adjustment: mild chewing fatigue with hard foods is possible for the first week or two, then settles
Is it right for you?
Masseter Botox tends to help most if you clench or grind (especially at night), wake with a sore jaw or headaches, have noticeable tooth wear, or have a strong, square jaw from years of clenching. At your consultation Celeste examines your jaw and gives you an honest read on whether it's the right fit — and whether pairing it with physical therapy or a nightguard would help.
